Love prompt-a-day challenges? Welcome to the 2025 Duck Prints Press Kinks-Your-Tober challenge – 31 days of prompts, three prompts per day, loads of horny ideas there for the taking!
This is a rules-light challenge with no minimum word count or minimum art amount or whatnot. We’re kinking up your October, so anything goes! Pick one prompt per day or mix-and-match all three. Create fiction, art, graphics, playlists, or whatever else floats your boat. Fanworks or original works welcome. Combine our list with other October lists or don’t. Anything goes!! The only thing we won’t tolerate? Intolerance: no kinkshaming, shipshaming, fandom hate, etc.
We’re not reblogging or boosting works; this is a lowkey, for-fun challenge for y’all and for us. But, if you post your accurately tagged work to AO3, we encourage you to add it to the Kinks-Your-Tober 2025 collection. You can check out the 2024 collection too.
Also, feel free to come hang with us on our Book Lover’s Server!

Bring on the Kink, Y’all!

Artist Spotlight: Max Jason Peterson

We’re approaching the end of our campaign to fund making art prints and a 2026 calendar featuring queer art by 9 different artists – it’s only got 4 days left, with pre-orders closing on September 15th 2025. Check out the campaign now!

Max Jason Peterson is the third and final artist to have contributed two pieces (along with May Barros and Jagoda Zirebiec). Max’s charming watercolor pieces contribute greatly to the overall queer joy vibe of the art in our calendar!

Artwork of two older, white-haired white men sitting side by side on a red cushion on the deck of a blue ship. One man has his arm around the others' shoulder, and the other man is playing a lute. They are surrounded by a background of a lake with green hills in the background and other sailboats visible. A dragon curls its tail around the mast and there is a Nessie in the lake. On one side, an orange tabby cat looks over the edge of the boat to meet the gaze of a duck surrounded by ducklings looking up.Artwork of two men, one Black with short curly hair, the other white with red hair, wearing fantasy winter clothing and kneeling in the snow holding hands while looking at each other fondly. Where their hands are joined, magical sparkles and a heart rise up. The Black man is flanked by a bobcat; the white man has a cat in a basket beside him. There are snowy winter trees in the background.

The piece on the left is entitled Treasure; according to Max, “‘Treasure’ refers to many things in this piece: the treasure of a love that lasts; the treasure that each man is to the other; the wealth of their happiness together through all the years; and the beauty and peace of this setting (in which cats and ducks, sea monsters and sailboats exist in harmony). In this painting, ‘Treasure’ is both a noun and verb, for the men truly treasure each other, their lives, and these experiences. The beings depicted here treasure their friendship and good will for one another as well.” Buy art prints of “Treasure.”

Max chose not to share the inspiration behind his other piece, Snow Heart, but the love and affection radiates from the page. Buy art prints of “Snow Heart.”

Artist Spotlight: Aaron Kotze

Aaron Kotze, who did the cover art for our anthology Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica, graces our collection of art prints and the month of June in our 2026 calendar of queer art with this lovely piece.

Grayscale artwork of two men shown from the back. One man is black, the other lighter-skinned. They stand before a blank background, as if looking into the horizon, with a field of grass under their feet. Both are in modern cowboy garb - brimmed hats, fridged shirts, and assless chaps.

The title of this artwork is Ol’ Reliable. About this piece, Aaron had this to say: “The entire first half of our relationship I tried, and failed, to get my partner to enjoy Spaghetti Westerns with me. Recently, however, he discovered a gay cowboy audiobook and has become OBSESSED with the genre. If only I had thought of it sooner.”

Get the 2026 Calendar (including this queer art and 11 other pieces!) during our Pre-Order Campaign Ending September 15th!

You can also buy art prints of Ol’ Reliable!

WWW Wednesday

1. What are you currently reading?

  • 我和我对家 by PEPA: I am chipping away! I thought that picking something in a modern, casual style would be easier but I think it's actually harder, the first person pov narrator talks so colloquially and uses so much slang.  Still, I was aiming for one mini-chapter a day (there are typically two to four per page) and have been managing more like 1 to 2 pages a day, and while the internal narration often has me ??? a lot of the time, the actual descriptive paragraphs and dialogue I can follow pretty well.
  • The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett: I finished part 2 last night! Slow progress but progress!

2. What have you recently finished?

  • Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory vol. 1 by Fei Tian Ye Xiang: surprise I read a novel, lmao. I was feeling really crappy over the weekend and I needed something quick and fluffy, and this fit the bill really well. Modern mlm slice-of-life about a rich gay loner who decides to pretend to be a regular guy and rent out rooms in his house to other gay men.
  • Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide vol. 5 by Mone Sorai
  • 破云 manhua vol. 1 by 淮上
  • Case Closed vol. 1 by Gosho Aoyama: I read this a million years ago but forgot everything. The localization choices re: names sure are. something. My Libbys only have one vol. available but I'd probably read more if I could. idk.
  • World's End Blue Bird vol. 2 by Anji Seina: still rather enjoying this. Found out it's only 4 volumes...
  • Wild Beast Forest House vol. 1 and 2 by Imma R.: this was much cuter than I was expecting it to be? The cover art made it look like it'd be animal person smut but it's actually mostly plot and slice-of-life.
  • The God and the Flightless Messenger by hagi: I liked this a lot but the pacing was wonky at times; I think it would have made a better duology than stand-alone.
  • This Reincarnated Cross-Dressing Princess Won't Be Looking for a Fiance by Saki Tsukigami and Akino Shiina: not my usual fare, in that it's het, but it's het about a girl who transmigrated into a BL novel but then all the guys fall for her instead of who they were supposed to. It was cute enough, though it tried to do WAY too much in one volume.
  • Dinosaur Sanctuary vol. 3 by Itaru Kinoshita
  • Suckers vol. 1 by Karki: I've now read all the not-based-on-franchises titles I bought from Aloha Comics, and this was my least favorite. Reads like it was originally one- to two-page shorts, but for this edition they lumped them as chapters so it felt like it jumped around so much. Also the characters are kinda unappealing. I doubt I'll buy vol. 2.
  • Tegan and Sara: Crush by Tegan and Sara Quin and Tillie Walden: about the same as the first, though a bit more cohesive. wlw and mlm, and bisexual rep.
  • Let's Eat Together, Aki & Haru vol. 1 by Makoto Taji: this was a cute, food-centered modern BL. So far the mlm is extremely subtextual (they're roommates but they're entirely platonic, tho they're inching into "long term qpr" territory), I'm hoping it'll be a bit more surface in vol. 2.

3. What will you be reading next?

Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory vol. 2, obviously (it's a duology), for books.

From the physical library, vol. 2 of Marvel's Runaways.

From Libby, the next two due are iberico Pork & Slave of Love vol. 1 by SHOOWA and BL Metamorphosis vol. 1 by Kaori Tsurutani, so those, among other things. I had a lot of holds come in over the last couple weeks (all manga or manga adjacent) so I'm gonna try to get through those.

Duck Prints Press Vending This Weekend: Two Events!

This weekend, Duck Prints Press will be vending at two events – one on Saturday (September 13), one on Sunday (September 14).

A simple logo, showing artwork of a man reminiscent of the sculpture "the thinker" and text that reads "Albacon 2025 September 12 - 14 2025"

Saturday, September 13th: Albacon

This weekend-long science fiction and fantasy convention is at the Clifton Park Marriott Courtyard, right off the Northway north of Albany. Author Tris Lawrence will be at the convention the entire weekend, but I will only be making a short appearance on Saturday, vending from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Dealer’s Row. If you’re at the con, make sure you don’t miss me while I’m there!

A graphic with text that reads "A Big Gay Market" followed by a heart in the colors of the progress pride flag. beside this it says SARATOGA SPRINGS and there's the logo of the Kaleidoscope Cafe, with their name and a colorful circle that looks like colors refracted through a kaleidoscope.

Sunday, September 14th: A Big Gay Market Pop-Up at Kaleidoscope Cafe

On Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., we’ll be set up at Kaleidoscope Cafe in Saratoga Springs. 36 vendors will be in attendance, with yummy treats for sale at the cafe off course, outdoors on what’s looking to be a nice, warm, and hopefully dry day! This is only my second time vending in Saratoga Springs, and I hope to see you there.

Artist Spotlight: swev.art

Artwork of two merpeople, one in shades of ping with long pink hair, blue gills, and a fancy fan tail, the other in shades of blue, with pink gills and a very long blue and turquoise tail. They swirl around each other before a dark background punctuated with sparkles. Between them, the blue merperson raises a hand to touch the tail of an iridescent rainbow seahorse.

This charming artwork – untitled – by swev.art features two merpeople and an adorable rainbow seahorse, and is one of 12 works featured in our 2026 queer art calendar! Art prints of this piece and the others in the project are also available.

Pre-order your 2026 calendar and art prints today! Don’t miss your chance – pre-orders close on September 15th.

swev had this to say about this artwork, by the way: Since this is the May post [originally, this work was posted to our Patreon in May 2025], it seemed obvious that I should paint some mermaids – Mermay has long been an event I’ve enjoyed! I wanted to have two distinctly different merpeople, so one is inspired by a watersnake and the other one more loosely by dragonfish, bettas, and flowers. For the colours, I wanted to incorporate Pride colours in some capacity, so I looked to the lesbian and nonbinary flags for inspiration.

Artist Spotlight: radicalhoodie

Artwork of two people standing side by side before a pink and yellow background. The figure on the right has light skin, dark eyes, and dark hair pulled back into a short ponytail. They are scowling and blushing. The other figure is also light skinned, but has yellow eyes and blond hair; they lean one elbow on the first person's shoulder and have the other hand on their check, and are smiling at them fondly.

radicalhoodie’s piece april’s sweet showers, originally created as a backer reward for our supporters on Patreon, will – unsurprisingly – grace our 2026 calendar during the month of April! radicalhoodie chose not to share the inspiration behind this piece, which means there’s tons of room for us as viewers to bring our own interpretation to this blushing pair! As with all 12 pieces for our calendar, april’s sweet showers is also available as an art print.

Artist Spotlight: Jagoda Zirebiec

Welcome to our third of nine spotlights featuring the artists contributing to our 2026 calendar of queer art! Art prints of all the works are also being made for you to order, should you wish to. We’ve previously introduced Zel Howland and May Barros.

Today, meet Jagoda Zirebiec, artist behind March and August!

Learn more about the art and pre-order your 2026 calendar and/or art prints on the Duck Prints Press website before September 15!

Artwork of a person with long hair in thick braids and a fitted dress lying in a forest beside a pond, holding a dagger in one hand. The other hand reaches toward the water; our of the water reaches their reflection, except the reflection has thicker musculature/build and is wearing armer and holding a long sword.Artwork of two men standing side by side before, leaning on a fence. The sky behind them is golden, and they are painted around the edges in golds as well. They both wear button-up long-sleeve shirts and brimmed cowboy hats, and wedding rings. The central figure, in a white shirt with tanned skin and stubble, has an arm around the other figure, whose hand is raised to his hat brim, has dark tanned skin, and wears a blue shirt.

For March, Jagoda Zirebiec created a piece entitled I want to be different. They said this about the inspiration: Instead of focusing on relationships, I wanted to play around with “self-reflection.” So I came up with a idea of trans character seeing their “ideal” self in a water reflection. Here is a medieval setting, so their ideal is a knight.

Jagoda’s piece Sunset is August in our calendar; while they didn’t opt to speak about their inspiration, that leaves us room to bring our own interpretations to this cowboy duo limned in gold.

Love this art? You can get it for yourself!

Artist Spotlight: May Barros

Today’s artist-contributor to our art print and 2026 calendar pre-order campaign, did two pieces for the calendar! May Barros’s Magic Friendship is the February piece, and Spark is the piece for September!

Curious about this project? Pre-orders are currently open for art prints of twelve pieces of queer art by nine different artists, and for a 2026 calendar featuring all the artwork! You can learn more about the campaign, and place pre-orders, on our website!

Artwork of a person with pointed ears, light skin, and blue hair falling to their mid back. They are wearing an orange dress with a flower motif on the bottom. In their raised arms, they are gently holding a dark orange winged cat who has a blue belly. The person and the cat are touching noses. The background is indistinct blue. The colors match those of the Aroace Pride Flag.Artwork of a person with long white hair, big pink earrings, earing an off-the-shoulder dress in shades of blue and white. Her hands are raised before her, palms cupped, and above her hands stands a small blue figure aflame. The palette for the piece is whites, blues, and pinks.

On the left is Magical Friendship. May Barros wrote thus about her inspiration: “I wanted to bring in the aspect of queerness that is most dear to my heart: my identity as an aroace person. I used the aroace flag colors. The fantasy is befriending beings that are different from us, represented by the flying cat. The challenge in making queer art is that most of the references include romantic undertones, and I wanted to make sure my piece wouldn’t read as a romantic piece.”

About Spark, on the right, she said: “‘Spark’ is my way of expressing the joy of self-creation that is inherent in a trans identity. I did not set out to make a trans piece, but the colors picked themselves and I ran with them.”

To get these specific art pieces…

Or, did you know? Patreon backers at the $10/month or $25/month levels get access to the digital downloads of all of the art pieces posted to our Patreon in the past – 13 so far and counting! – and also access the new art piece digital versions as they are released! If you back during September, you can also claim freebie merchandise valued up to $5, and backing comes with lots of other awesome perks, too! Become a backer today!

Artist Spotlight: Zel Howland

We’re getting an early start on ringing in the new year by producing a 2026 calendar of queer art made by artists who work with Duck Prints Press! All the artworks are also available as prints. If you’re looking to support a queer indie press, queer creators, and queer art, check out our pre-order page now!

Today, meet Zel Howland, who is also a writer with Duck Prints Press. Her piece, entitled Chrysopoeia, is the art for January!

Artwork of two women on the ground of a cave, surrounded by glowing orange candles. One is ghostly white, her knees tucked up to her chest with her arms wrapped around them, wearing a tattered dress. Her long hair tumbles over her face. The other is put-together with her hair in a high-bun, wearing a pink-purple long-sleeved dress that is spattered with blood. The second woman has an arm around the spectral woman's shoulders and is drawing the veil of hair away from her face. The first woman is looking away from the second woman; the second woman watches the first woman, her face not pointing toward the viewer in the intensity of her regard.

Zel created this piece as a tie in to her story of the same title, Chrysopoeia.

Zel had this to say about the inspiration for this work: “This piece was inspired by my short story Chrysopoeia, featuring (spoilers!) Faith comforting the ghost of Viola after a botched resurrection. I wanted to capture the emotion of the scene rather than making a perfect depiction, which means many of the details aren’t the same as in the story, but the tenderness, yearning, and eeriness shine through.”

Want this piece for yourself?

WWW Wednesday

1. What are you currently reading?

idk why I'm procrastinating badly on The Tainted Cup but. I'm procrastinating badly on The Tainted Cup. No Progress since last week. My only other reads-in-progress are both in Chinese - the manhua of 破云/Breaking Through the Clouds by 淮上, which I'm almost done with, and 我和我对家/I Ship My Rival x Me by PEPA, which is my first really serious attempt at reading a novel in Chinese and which I expect to be a read-in-progress for at least the next month, maybe longer. Like seriously, I'm reading like half a page a day and it's over 200 pages long, so if I'm done by the end of the year that'll be a win. Don't expect me to include it every Wednesday but. assume I'm chipping away (or have failed miserably and given up.)

2. What have you recently finished reading?

I've been reading so much manga because I haven't managed to brain novel.

  • Lout of Count's Family manhua chapters 1 to 100 by Yu Ryeo-Han and PING
  • Dinosaur Sanctuary vol. 2 by Itaru Kinoshita
  • Cover My Scars with your Kiss vol. 2 by Io Amaki: it's been long enough that I don't really remember volume 1 beyond "I know I liked that" but I liked this too. Very porny this time.
  • Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure by Lewis Hancox: I'd accidentally read Hancox's second autobiographical graphic novel about a year ago; I think this one is the better of the two.
  • Far Sector by N. K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell: the DC comic that poses the question, "where do Green Lanterns fall in the spectrum of ACAB?" It had some pacing issues imo but otherwise was quite good (and queer! the mc is bi. and into aliens.)
  • Yona of the Dawn vol. 15 by Mizuho Kusanagi
  • Kindred Spirits on the Roof by Aya Fumio and Hachi Ito: I didn't know when I borrowed this that it was based on a gl otome, but it was fine without knowing that. Very cute and low stakes fluffy wlw stories.
  • Tegan and Sara Junior High by Tegan and Sara Quin and Tillie Walden: fictionalized history about the singers. One is a lesbian. It's cute enough.
  • The Way of the Househusband vol. 10 by Kousuke Oono
  • I Ship My Rival x Me manhua vol. 1 by PEPA and Qualia: my 4th time reading this, trying to refresh my memory to help with reading the novel in Chinese. Wei Yanzi why you gotta use so much slang
  • Kaiju No. 8: B-Side vol. 1 by Kentaro Hidano, Keiji Ando, and Naoya Matsumoto: I didn't realize this'd be a manga version of stuff covered in the light novel I read. It's fine. Nothing new tho.
  • Haikyu!! vol. 40 by Haruichi Furudate
  • Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide vol. 4 by Mone Sorai: ngl I'm liking this more and more.
  • Sakamoto Days vol. 6 by Yuto Suzuki: this is getting more ridiculous but not in a bad way, lmao. tbh I mostly read it to free up a slot in my "borrowed from the NYPL Libby" (which caps at only 3 books, sigh) so I could borrow Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide vol. 5 lmao.

3. What will you read next?

I really need to actually read The Tainted Cup. I really liked what I've read so far! I think I'm mostly stressed about my kids starting school (today's the first week) and the last week has been kinda all over the place, busy-ness wise. I def won't be starting another novel til I'm done, not least because my next novel is Dream of the Red Chamber, which will NOT be easier on my brain or more enjoyable, lmao.

Next-up from the physical library is the second Tegan and Sarah book, Crush, and then I've got most of the run of Marvel's Runaways.

On Libby, nothing is due in the next week so I'll probably read whatever I feel like reading. Which will probably be Our Not-So-Lonely Planet Travel Guide vol. 5.

Now Available: Fannish Safety Sign Stickers!

A banner with text and images over a simple brick-like background. It's entitled "Fannish Safety Signs: sticker pack by Duck Prints Press." A small banner beside this says, "funded in under 6 hours." At the top of the graphic are two "caution tape" style graphics in yellow and black: one reads "angst beyond this point" the other "caution dead dove do not eat." Two black and white graphics on the left are shown. One says "be alert for idiots in love" and includes two simple figure silhouettes with question marks over their heads passing a heart between them; the other shows a person sinking into a hole with text that reads "be alert for plot holes." At the bottom are two yellow and black caution signs; one reads "there's only one bed" with a picture of a neatly made bed; the other reads "caution enemies to lovers" and features two crossed swords with a heart over their tips. Lastly, there's a blue and white graphic with a list of five items, each illustrated, and text at the bottom reads "the required focus aids above must be prepared before a fanfic-reading session"; the five aids are "preferred website," "suitable timeslot," "cozy blanket," "imminent schedule," and "comfort blorbos."

Did you miss our crowdfunding campaign for stickers of our Fannish Safety Signs designed by Xianyu Zhou? Did you back it but subsequently realized you just gotta get more of these funny, quirky stickers? Well, we gotchu! Fannish Safety Sign Stickers – 39 designs in all! – are now available in the Duck Prints Press webstore!

No idea what I’m talking about? Xianyu Zhou design three different styles of “Fannish Safety Signs” that we have made as stickers – BE ALERT FOR, CAUTION, and THE REQUIRED FOCUS AIDS MUST BE PREPARED BEFORE…. There’s also a caution tape sticker sheet, and we hit a stretch goal and unlocked a fourth design – [BLANK] AT WORK. All the stickers are glossy, vinyl stickers and were printed by StickerNinja, except the AT WORK stickers, which are on glossy vinyl hologram sticker paper and were printed by Vograce.
CAUTION Stickers: There are 16 variations on the basic yellow-and-black CAUTION sign design. Each measures 4.2 in x 3 in (10.66 cm x 7.6 cm).
BE ALERT Stickers: There are 17 variations on the basic Be Alert For… white-and-black foundation. Each measures 3 in x 4.5 in (7.6 cm x 11.4 cm).

Queer Reads by Australian Authors for Wear it Purple Day!

8 book covers, text and a graphic of a purple t-shirt with text and an outline of Australia, all on a background of the Rainbow Flag. The text reads: Queer Books From Australia. The text on the t-shirt reads: Wear It Purple Day. The books are: An Accident of Stars by Foz Meadows; Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton & Aśka; A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows; The Sweetness Between Us by Sarah Winifred Searle; She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan; A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske; Always Human by Ari North; Strange Bedfellows by Ariel Slamet Ries.

Wear It Purple Day, which is today – August 29th 2025 – is an annual event drawing attention to LGBTQIA+ youth in Australia, with an emphasis on acceptance and education. We thought it’d make a great opportunity to draw attention to some Australian authors and their queer books! The contributors to the list are: Shadaras, Nina Waters, Shea Sullivan, Dei Walker, and an anonymous contributor.

An Accident of Stars by Foz Meadows

When Saffron Coulter stumbles through a hole in reality, she finds herself trapped in Kena, a magical realm on the brink of civil war.

There, her fate becomes intertwined with that of three very different women: Zech, the fast-thinking acolyte of a cunning, powerful exile; Viya, the spoiled, runaway consort of the empire-building ruler, Vex Leoden; and Gwen, an Earth-born worldwalker whose greatest regret is putting Leoden on the throne. But Leoden has allies, too, chief among them the Vex’Mara Kadeja, a dangerous ex-priestess who shares his dreams of conquest.

Pursued by Leoden and aided by the Shavaktiin, a secretive order of storytellers and mystics, the rebels flee to Veksh, a neighboring matriarchy ruled by the fearsome Council of Queens. Saffron is out of her world and out of her depth, but the further she travels, the more she finds herself bound to her friends with ties of blood and magic.

Can one girl – an accidental worldwalker – really be the key to saving Kena? Or will she just die trying?

Stars in Their Eyes by Jessica Walton & Aśka

Maisie has always dreamed of meeting her hero, Kara Bufano, an amputee actor who plays a kick-arse amputee character in her favourite show. Fancon is big and exciting and exhausting. Then she meets Ollie, a cute volunteer who she has a lot in common with. Could this be the start of something, or will her mum, who doesn’t seem to know what boundaries are, embarrass her before she and Ollie have a chance?

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

“Stolen me? As soon to say a caged bird can be stolen by the sky.”

Velasin vin Aaro never planned to marry at all, let alone a girl from neighboring Tithena. When an ugly confrontation reveals his preference for men, Vel fears he’s ruined the diplomatic union before it can even begin. But while his family is ready to disown him, the Tithenai envoy has a different solution: for Vel to marry his former intended’s brother instead.

Caethari Aeduria always knew he might end up in a political marriage, but his sudden betrothal to a man from Ralia, where such relationships are forbidden, comes as a shock.

With an unknown faction willing to kill to end their new alliance, Vel and Cae have no choice but to trust each other. Survival is one thing, but love―as both will learn―is quite another.

Byzantine politics, lush sexual energy, and a queer love story that is by turns sweet and sultry. Foz Meadows’ A Strange and Stubborn Endurance is an exploration of gender, identity, and self-worth. It is a book that will live in your heart long after you turn the last page.

The Sweetness Between Us by Sarah Winifred Searle

After health problems wiped out their first few weeks of school, Perley and Amandine are both starting their Junior year behind their classmates, and both have major changes in their lives that they’re struggling to get used to. Perley was diagnosed with diabetes over the summer, and worries that all these new medical expenses will be a hardship on his family. And Amandine, part of a venerated family of vampires, has been turned much younger than she expected to be after a car accident nearly killed her. The two of them form a fast friendship – both feel a little out of step with their old lives, and as a bonus, it turns out that Amandine’s new vampire abilities can help Perley save money on blood glucose tests. But as the year goes on, they’re forced to admit that maybe their coping strategies – and their blood-sipping-turned-romance – aren’t working out so well after all. Will they be able to get their lives back to normal? Or will both have to figure out new ways for their “normal” to look?

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan

To possess the Mandate of Heaven, the female monk Zhu will do anything

“I refuse to be nothing…”

In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…

In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.

When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother’s identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.

After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future altogether: her brother’s abandoned greatness.

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. He’s struggling to be a good older brother, a responsible employer, and the harried baronet of a seat gutted by his late parents’ excesses. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he discovers what’s been operating beneath the unextraordinary reality he’s always known.

Now Robin must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it—not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy, who clearly wishes Robin were anyone and anywhere else.

Robin’s predecessor has disappeared, and the mystery of what happened to him reveals unsettling truths about the very oldest stories they’ve been told about the land they live on and what binds it. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles—and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep.

Always Human by Ari North

In the near-future, people use technology to give the illusion of all kinds of body modifications-but some people have “Egan’s Syndrome,” a highly sensitive immune system that rejects these “mods” and are unable to use them. Those who are affected maintain a “natural” appearance, reliant on cosmetics and hair dye at most to help them play with their looks.

Sunati is attracted to Austen the first time she sees her and is drawn to what she assumes is Austen’s bravery and confidence to live life unmodded. When Sunati learns the truth, she’s still attracted to Austen and asks her on a date. Gradually, their relationship unfolds as they deal with friends, family, and the emotional conflicts that come with every romance. Together, they will learn and grow in a story that reminds us no matter how technology evolves, we will remain . . . always human.

Strange Bedfellows by Ariel Slamet Ries

In the not-too-distant future, most of humanity resides on its last-ditch effort at Meridian, a remote alien planet where you’re more likely to be born superhuman than left-handed.

None of that is important to Oberon Afolayan. Since his mildly public breakdown, his whole life seems to be spiraling out of control—from dropping out of university to breaking up with his boyfriend, it seems like only a karmic inevitability when he wakes up one day with the ability to conjure his dreams in the real world.

Oberon’s newfound powers come with a facsimile of his high school crush, Kon, who mysteriously dropped off the face of the planet almost three years ago and who is a little more infuriating (if not also infuriatingly hot) than Oberon remembers.

Kon makes it his mission to turn Oberon’s life around, and while they struggle to get a handle on his powers and his disastrous personal life (not to mention the appearance of strange nightmare creatures), it turns out this dream version of Kon has secrets of his own—dangerous ones.

Oberon might have more on his plate than he originally thought, but is giving up his dreams—even the one he might have accidentally fallen in love with—the only way to find happiness in reality?

Friday Five: Garbage and Recycling

1. Does where you live have regular doorstep rubbish collections or do you have to take your trash somewhere else?

Yep, where I live now does - we just have to drag everything to the back alley on the right day and the municipal garbage trucks take care of it. Most places I've lived do. Only exception was my grandfather's place, which was in a small town - that we'd have to take ourselves.

2. Do you separate recycling? What sort of stuff gets recycled from your household?

Absolutely. Cardboard, plastic when possible, metal, glass, all together cause we have single-stream. We also have can and bottle deposit, those go to the supermarket and we get our 5 cents per can/bottle back - that's, like, beer and soft drinks.

3. Do you take things you don't need to charity shops, or give them away online, or sell them secondhand, or ...?

A mix. We take a lot of eligible things to a charity shop (usually Goodwill, here, or if it's furniture, the ReStore). For stuff that isn't eligible for those, we'll often post them on a "Buy Nothing" group my wife is on FB. Occasionally, if it's actually something with substantial value, we'll sell it. But that's really rare, we mostly give it away. I'd rather something go to a place where someone can use it.

4. Do you pick up litter in your local area, from streets or trails or play areas or parks? Have you ever found anything interesting discarded or lost in a public space?

Not as often as I feel I should, but I try to do a little, yeah. I'll sometimes clean up other dogs' leavings when I get my own, and any trash that blows into our section of the back alley or front yard, I pick up. Sometimes, if it's easy and a garbage can is convenient, I'll grab other stuff too, especially if it's like - I'm out hiking and there's relatively "clean" garbage on the trail. It doesn't belong there! I pick it up. My dad actually often brings a garbage bag when he goes hiking - he did trail maintenance for a while so he Gets It.

5. Are there "repair cafés" near you to help mend fixable items? Have you ever been helped by a community repair service or volunteered for one? Do you do any other kind of upcycling?

I have never heard of a repair cafe but that sounds glorious. I don't know of anything like that around here. I do occasionally upcycle but not often. I also, though it hasn't been mentioned, fairly regularly dumpster dive for furniture or household goods or toys. Since we all put our garbage out in the back alley, when I walk the dog on garbage night/morning I can see what everyone else has put out, and I'll grab things that look good if I'm able to. I often wish I could do more, people throw out so much furniture that looks fine or like it'd be fine with a little repair, but that's outside what I'm able to do rn.
